Introduction:

One has to travel through the road of one’s life a long way if not curtailed abruptly. Sometimes it is smooth but most of the times it is bumpy having unknown turns. Learning makes the travel through this uncanny road easy but education helps to understand the meaning of life. It gives the direction in life, which is not development of self only but through self-development employ oneself for the advancement and betterment of mankind. A commerce graduate has to know every facet of life as they are to tie up all ends to lead the advance of society towards prosperity.

History of the College:

It was 15 August, 1947 that India became independent with a scar on its map. Millions of hapless people crossed the border of divided India in Punjab and Bengal with none to receive them but many to harass and hate them. A section of them designated by the piteous term Refugee came and settled in the adjacent areas where now is the College with some of their belongings leaving most behind them on the other side of the border - at present known as Bangladesh. The College is located in such an area They had with them actually nothing to depend upon except the tireless determination to fight out together every odd that might come in their way to live the life of a complete human being. That indomitable urge for living a human life enthused them to give equal emphasis to the education for their children with the search for food and shelter. It was this unbridled desire for education that prompted them to plan for a place of higher education in their locality. They mobilised their will and led a unique struggle to seize the permission for the establishment of a college in the year 1967 from Justice Bidhubhusan Malik the then Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta. Their dream-come-true College was given the name NETAJI NAGAR COLLEGE after the name of the locality where it started its functioning in evening in the building of Netaji Nagar Vidyamandir. Thereafter its relentless journey has been a history of devotion, achievements and glory. In 1986, with an aim for speedy expansion, it was trifurcated into three separate colleges namely Netaji Nagar College, Netaji Nagar Day College and Netaji Nagar College for Women.
After trifurcation, Netaji Nagar Day College expanded in all spheres and acquired a prestigious position in national and international academic arena. The College started a new wing named Netaji Nagar Day College Computer Centre with a state of the art, laboratory facility to make students proficient with the latest developments in the area. Laboratories of different science subjects of the College are equally equipped and continuous improvements are going on to make them at par with the recent developments.

History of the Department:

The Department of Commerce of this College was started as an extended section of the erstwhile Netaji Nagar College. So since inception, it has been teaching students of both Honours and General (previously known as Pass) standards. Initially there was only one section where classes for Honours papers were taken separately for Honours students. Classes on common papers were held jointly with Honours and General students. To accommodate the pressing demand from students and guardians to increase the number of admissions in the Department, the single section for Commerce was split into two separate sections - one exclusively for Honours and the other for Pass students in the year 1983. From the Academic Session 2003-04, Honours in Marketing has been introduced with the continuation of Honours in Accounts & Finance and General. Students of the Department are also getting updated training in Information Technology with the aid of operating Computer as per revised Commerce Syllabus of University of Calcutta. From the Academic Session 2017-18 University of Calcutta introduce uniform syllabi under Choice Base Credit System (CBCS) at the Under- Graduate level only for Commerce.
